city highlights
Montréal is a thriving multicultural city with many different neighbourhoods, each of which are unique in terms of their community, culture, specialties, architecture, and activities.
Here are a few suggestions on how to spend your free time.
- Explore the streets of the downtown area to discover shops, businesses and restaurants, and to take in the skyscrapers and historical buildings:
• Sainte-Catherine Street
• Crescent Street
• Sherbrooke Street
• Saint-Laurent Boulevard
- Stroll through the hip, popular Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood and discover its cafés, theaters, restaurants, “friperies” (second-hand clothing shops), and specialty food stores. If you’re hungry, stop at Schwartz’s Deli and have one of their famous smoked meat sandwiches, or at La Banquise and try what may well be the best poutine in Québec.
- Take a walk on Mount Royal, an oasis of green in the heart of downtown. Climb up to the Mount Royal Park Chalet and the Kondiaronk Belvedere for a breathtaking view of downtown and the St. Lawrence River.
- Amble along the narrow streets of Old Montréal, discover its many historical buildings, visit its art galleries, boutiques, and “café-terrasses,” or take a stroll along the Quays of the Old Port of Montréal.
- Visit one of Montréal’s many museums.
- 24 heures de sciences
This just in - as if all that wasn't enough, now there's even more reason to visit Montréal - "24 heures de sciences" is an innovative and intense science promotion event that will be continuing on May 8th. After the conference, why not stick around a little longer and enjoy some of those events before leaving the city! Visit www.science24heures.com for details.
